The driver did not comment as to how they would be able to perform against the other teams this season. “At this stage… we are not looking at the other teams too much,“ said Kubica. Instead, the third-year driver said that he is just expecting everyone to start the season with a bang. “It‘s quite normal that everybody only shows their full potential at the start of the season in Australia,“ Kubica concluded.

Kubica‘s teammate, German Nick Heidfeld, agrees with the Polish driver. “We can steer the car much more accurately now,“ said Heidfeld. The German Formula One driver though is not yet sure how their car equipped with high-quality BMW radiators will be able to match up with the other teams‘ cars.

“We don‘t know the car well enough yet,“ said Heidfeld. “There is still so much to do before the season starts in Melbourne, so it is impossible to make any predictions.“

Meanwhile, BMW Sauber test driver Christian Klien has this to say about his expectation for the team: “The team was the third strongest in 2007 and finished 2nd in the World Championship for Constructors last season and 5th and 6th in the Drivers series, so I think the BMW Sauber F1 Team has already shown its ability to compete at the front. The next step is going to be a difficult one – we want to win the first race in 2008. Amid stringent emissions standards, automakers are faced with the dilemma of producing the profitable gas-guzzlers or concentrating on the fuel efficient small cars. But the latter seems to be domineering than the former.

At the opening of the Geneva show Thursday, automakers flaunted their leanest and greenest road machines. Slim, sleek, and green – the road machines show they were on a strict diet. A diet composed of lighter materials, upgraded engines, electricity-generating brakes, sophisticated in-car technology, and cleaner tailpipe emissions.

Automakers at the Geneva show believe that in order to offer big, one need not increase dimensions and weight. They simply have to make the car features responsive to what the world asks in general, and what the consumers need in particular.

Minus the extraordinary towing and hauling capacity, the cars need not offer sturdy built and remarkable off-road performance. What’s more, they can do away with other auto accessories such as tonneau cover. At the said show Thursday morning, approximately 20 activists protested, demanding that automakers rethink what makes a good car and calling for average fleet emissions to be limited to 120 grams per kilometer by 2012, and 80 grams by 2020, reported MSNBC.

Martin Lloyd of Greenpeace accused automakers of “greenwashing” their industry with a few headline-grabbing eco models while continuing to sell heavier, faster and less efficient vehicles. “The industry knows what it has to do and it has the technology to do it,” he concluded.

Mitsubishi Motors Corp. recently introduced “Step Up 2010”, its mid-term business plan for fiscal years 2008 through 2010, which will end on March 31, 2001. Also, Mitsubishi plans to expand reach with the i-MiEV, set to arrive at dealerships by 2010.

The i-MiEV comes from the Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle (MiEV) clan, a name given to the automaker’s alternative propulsion technologies. Other watchers in the industry predicted that the cute little electric car with the top speed of about 80 mph and a maximum travel of 100 miles will not make it into the real automotive realm. But the Japanese automaker proved them wrong.

The maker of Mitsubishi radiators wants to do better in the area of financial responsibility and environmental concerns. With the Step Up plan, the automaker sets sales target of 1,422,000 units, a 6.4 percent raise over the fiscal 2007 forecast of 1,337,000. Mitsubishi will also expand mid-sized platform cars and will include an SUV based pickup. The automaker also plans to make the i-MiEV global by reaching Europe and North America not just Japan.

The two-seater i-MiEV, which is designed for urban use, is Mitsubishi’s effort to combat global warming issues. The automaker will zero in on smaller and low impact sport utilities as well as core technologies stressing the development of clean diesel engines and the high-efficiency automated manual transmission Twin Clutch SST (Sport Shift Transmission), according to the Green Car Congress.
